Figure Skating

2013 club champs competitors2

Figure Skating is the most predominant of the ice codes in Gore, we are lucky enough to be allocated the most ice time and have a strong contingent of Figure Skaters competing every year. Starting out in Figure Skating is a personal choice on how to go about it, you can start in group lessons at Kiwiskate, Tiny Tots, Adult Coffee 'n' Ice or contact a coach directly for private group or one on one sessions.

We host regular competitions in Gore, starting with our local annual Club Championships in June and then we are rostered on a rotating basis for Otago/Southland Sub Association Championships, South Island Sub Association Championships and every few years are lucky enough to host the New Zealand Ice Figure Skating Championships (last here in 2011).

Our club has one part time club coach and many senior skaters are also qualified to coach our Kiwiskate and Tiny Tots groups.

We generally recommend waiting until your child is at least 3 years of age before they start skating as even then sometimes they struggle to cope with balancing on skates and we can start them off in a Tiny Tots group along with other 3 & 4 year olds for just 30min each time.

If you have school aged children, they are welcome to join in with our fantastic Kiwiskate programme developed by the NZIFSA. Or they can give it a go in the school holidays at our Learn to Skate classes which generally run during one week of the school holidays dependant on coaching staff.

However if you are an adult and don't want the kids seeing you attempt to do half the tricks they can do then come along to our Adults only Coffee 'n' Ice group where you can get on the ice for the first 45min and then warm up out in the meeting room with a hot cuppa and a natter before heading home.

For more information on joining these groups you can contact us here.
